A Simple Analytic Treatment of the Intergalactic Absorption Effect in Blazar Gamma-Ray Spectra
نویسنده
چکیده
We derive a new and user friendly simple analytic approximation for determining the effect of intergalactic absorption on the γ-ray spectra of TeV blazars the energy range 0.2 TeV < Eγ < 2 TeV and the redshift range 0.05 < z < 0.4. In these ranges, the form of the absorption coefficient τ(Eγ) is approximately logarithmic. The effect of this energy dependence is to steepen intrinsic source spectra such that a source with an approximate power-law spectral index Γs is converted to one with an observed spectral index Γo ≃ Γs +∆Γ(z) where ∆Γ(z) is a linear function of z in the redshift range 0.05 – 0.4. We apply this approximation to the spectra of 7 TeV blazars. Intergalactic absorption and blazar γ-ray spectra
The distribution of TeV spectral slopes versus redshift for currently known TeV blazars (15 sources with z≤0.21, and one with z>0.25) is essentially a scatter plot with hardly any hint of a global trend. We suggest that this is the outcome of two combined effects of intergalactic γγ absorption, plus an inherent feature of the SSC (synchro-self-Compton) process of blazar emission. First, flux di...

Ongoing deep surveys of galaxy luminosity distribution functions, spectral energy distributions and backwards evolution models of star formation rates can be used to calculate the past history of intergalactic photon densities and, from them, the present and past optical depth of the universe to γ-rays from pair production interactions with these photons. Stecker, Malkan & Scully have recently ...

متن کاملAbsorption of High Energy Gamma Rays by Interactions With Starlight Photons in Extragalactic Space at High Redshifts and the High Energy Gamma-Ray Background
In this paper, we extend previous work on the absorption of high energy γ-rays in intergalactic space by calculating the absorption of 10 to 500 GeV γ-rays at high redshifts. This calculation requires the determination of the high-redshift evolution of the intergalactic starlight photon field, including its spectral energy distribution out to frequencies beyond the Lyman limit. To estimate this...
متن کاملIntergalactic Photon Spectra from the Far Ir to the Uv Lyman Limit for 0 < Z < 6 and the Optical Depth of the Universe to High Energy Gamma-rays
We calculate the intergalactic photon density as a function of both energy and redshift for 0 < z < 6 for photon energies from .003 eV to the Lyman limit cutoff at 13.6 eV in a ΛCDM universe with ΩΛ = 0.7 and Ωm = 0.3. The basic features of our backwards evolution model for galaxies were developed in Malkan and Stecker (1998 and 2001). With a few improvements, we find that this evolutionary mod...
